We have finally gotten a chance to sit down and let everyone know what has gone on in our lives in the past 48 hours. About 2 weeks ago Broadway’s mom was having some severe neck, back, and arm pain. She went to the hospital and they did some scans and found she had a bulging disk in her neck between her C6 and C7 vertebras. She went in and had a spinal fusion done the Tuesday before New Years. That surgery went well and she was healing fine. She had to wear a full neck brace for about 4 weeks, which was uncomfortable but manageable.
Well Sunday night (the 2nd) late she started getting what she thought was a migraine. This continued on through Monday, but on Tuesday she thought she was starting to feel better. Wednesday she woke up with the “migraine” again. She made an appointment with her regular doctor for 10:00 that morning. During this appointment her regular doctor thought it would be a good idea for her to get a CT scan of her head done and scheduled one for 2:00 that afternoon (Wednesday, Jan 5th). Because of her previous surgery and required neck brace, her father Poppa Broadway, was driving her around. They went home to grab a bite to eat for lunch in-between appointments. I guess while they were at home Denise was just standing in the living room and passed out, she didn’t hit her head or anything just crumpled to the floor. Poppa was able to get her into a chair where she passed out again. He called David (Broadway’s Step-Dad), 911, and Broadway’s Aunt Renee. David beat the ambulance out to their house from his work and was able to be with Denise as they loaded her into the ambulance.
I got a call at 1:45 from Broadway who said that his aunt had called him and they were taking his mom to the hospital. He really didn’t know what was going on, but was leaving work and would swing by and pick me up from work. We headed downtown to the south hospital and had a heck of a time trying to find her! Finally she came wheeling past us. They were taking her back to get a CT scan and David was sitting down to check her in. David was still really not sure what was going on, but said she was a little more coherent now than she was when he first got to the house. After finishing checking her in they came back by to take her back to a room in the ER. We went back and they were starting IV’s and getting her settled. We were only back there about 10 minuets before the doctor came in and dropped the bomb. Up until this point we had no idea what was going on, all Denise keep saying was her head hurt. We thought it might just be a really bad headache, some of her meds reacting to each other, or even a late side affect of her previous surgery. Nope. The doctor said she had bleeding in her brain from a ruptured aneurism. He also said that it was more than likely not even related to her previous surgery. He said they were not equipped for this type of emergency and they would have to Care Flight her to a hospital in Dallas.
At this point we all went into survival mode. B and I flew out of the hospital up to North Lamar High School to get his brother. Ethan is 15, and at this point had no idea what was going on. After the briefest explanation of what was going on, we didn’t want to freak him out, we were headed back to the hospital. When we got back probably one of the scariest moments of this whole ordeal so far was happening. Denise had a seizure and was coding. Thankfully we were not back there when this happened, and double thankful Ethan was not. Shortly after this they told us she was stable and we all got to go back and see her. She was talking again which was really encouraging. This was the first time I think Ethan really realized the severity of what was going on. They told us the closest Air Ambulance was in Mount Pleasant and would be here in 30 minuets or so. They also said that Baylor in Dallas had room for her and would be equipped to handle the bleed in her brain. It felt like it took forever, but finally the Air Ambulance showed up and they had her on her way to Dallas.
At his point Ethan left with his dad to run home and get a few things and we did the same then we were on our way to Dallas. Denise has a sister who lives in Waxahachie Texas, which is about an hour from Dallas. We called her as the helicopter was taking off and they were already on the road. They actually beat the helicopter to the hospital, which was really nice because we were about 2 hours away when the helicopter left. In midst of all this the one thing that I thought spoke so strongly about the woman that Denise is was all the people that showed up at the hospital. At one point we were taking up a whole section of the emergency room waiting area. There were her sisters, nieces, nephews, friends, and pastors. Some of the people I didn’t even know, but Denise had touched them in some way.
Again when we got there it felt like we sat waiting for news forever. Finally they came out and said that they were going to do another CT Scan because, typical of Paris, they had forgot to send her old scans. When we got the results they said their plan of action was to put a shunt in her brain right then to relieve some of the pressure on her brain, and they would do surgery in the morning when all the doctors and nurses would be the most rested. This was at like 9:00 PM maybe when they decided this. They said that when she came out of that procedure she would go into the ICU so we were finally able to move out of ER waiting room. We were not able to go back in to see her in the ICU until 2:30 Thursday morning. She was being kept unconscious at this point because she was intubated and they didn’t want her to pull any of her tubes out. It is so hard to see someone like that with tubes and wires everywhere but at least she was resting peacefully.
At this point, David, Ethan, B and I were able to go lay down and rest for a few hours in a very small hotel room in the hospital. After a few very restless hours of sleep we were up and back down in the ICU waiting room. It was shift change so we were unable to see her.
I had had my 36-week baby appointment scheduled for 10:15 that morning so B had called our good friend Aubrie to take me. The good news that came out of that appointment is that I’m dilated to a one!!!!!! So maybe baby Liam will be a January baby.
While I was gone I was getting updates from B. At about 9:00 they took her back to surgery. They were going in through her veins in her leg all the way up to her head. The best option they found while they were in her head was to put a metal mesh hose thing in the bleeding vein. She came out of the surgery as well as could be expected, and now the waiting game really begins. They said she could be in the medically induced coma (or whatever it’s called) for up to a week while the pressure in her brain goes down. And then she still will have a road of recovery in front of her.
The reports as of this morning are that everything is looking as good as can be expected. We are just so thankful that she had made it this far, and are so thankful for all the prayers and support from family and friends. This last 48 hours have felt like a week, so I’m sorry if any of this doesn’t make since or spelling and grammar is off ☺ We love you all so much and thank you for your continued prayers!!!
